UKCM app for iPhone and iPad
This application was developed for accredited road race course measurers. It will automate most of the common calculations performed as part of an official measurement of a road race course. The programme’s algorithms are compliant with the standard measurement techniques for using a ‘Jones’ or equivalent cycle-based counter.
Calculations using the app follow the sequence of performing counter calibration runs, defining a course then logging counter points as the course is ridden. Distance determinations, including automatic split distances, are based upon these logged reference points.
Various options can be configured to match the definition of the course, all of which are dynamically amended allowing recalculations based around the logged data.
Please keep a paper copy of your raw counter data!
In addition to the distance calculations displayed on the screen, the app will export the raw data in ‘CSV’ format (via iTunes sync to the desktop) to allow importation into the user’s spreadsheet of choice where custom formatting and calculations can take place.
As a by-product of some device’s location finding services, the app can attach approximate geographic position information to logged reference points. This ‘KML’ file is exported along with the ‘CSV’ file via the iTunes sync function to the user’s desktop application where it can be opened and viewed with a mapping application such as Google Earth. This functionality is provided as a ‘situational awareness’ feature only and has no bearing or relevance to the actual measurement of the course.
The application was tested on an iPod Touch but will run on any iPhone or iPad running iOS 4.2 or greater. Currently on the iPad the screens are merely an expanded version of the iPhone screen.
